About US
The Cornea society was originally founded in the year 2010, and over the years the society has evolved and lastly was named BCRS (Bangladesh cornea and refractive society) in December 2017. Our prestigious society BCRS has faced hurdles before becoming the entity it stands for today. The Society fosters the exchange of knowledge and information about the cornea and anterior segment of the eye through scientific meetings, communications, scientific journals and online and print clinical newsletters and content. It serves its members as an organization dedicated to advancing understanding of the cornea, refractive surgery, external eye and ocular surface and acts as a representative voice for specialists on a both national and global platform.
BACKGROUND
The long journey of the society was initiated by the joint efforts of several gurus working with cornea related diseases. In the year 2010 the society was established and in the following year (2011) the name BSCRS (Bangladesh society of cornea and refractive surgery) was given. Throughout the years of the esteemed society’s hurdle even the name had to be changed due to technical issues from BSCRS to finally Bangladesh Cornea and Refractive Society (BCRS) in December 2017.The new committee of 2018-19 was formed and ultimately the activities of the society gained a new momentum.
Our objective is to unite all the ophthalmologists interested in cornea and refractive surgery and also those who focused primarily in the subspecialty field of Cornea related issues. At the same time we want to encourage the newer generations of budding ophthalmologists into this field as it has an important role to play in our country.
So far two symposiums have been presented titled “Corneal Ulcer” and “Debate between Contact lens and LASIK”. We have observed several significant days such the “World Eyesight Day”. An appreciable number of doctors have successfully participated in several training programs both home and abroad. Till this day many cornea specialists have participated in conferences and seminars on international levels. However with this growing platform we hope in increase our intellect force by encouraging more research work , give proper training both nationally and internationally and acquiring data from each specialist so that we can find patterns of cornea related diseases and their demography residing in our country
Currently there are only 60 cornea surgeons in our country. Transplantation of the cornea is the main work of cornea surgeons but there isn’t enough collection of the cornea in our country due to several issues such as poor public awareness and conflicting religious views. Hence our hands are tied as we have to mainly rely on importing the corneas. However by now several eye banks have been established in our country, which is a good indicator of progress.
We are all aware that our developing country has an increasing load of agricultural trauma resulting into corneal ulcer and at the same time childhood trauma. This visually debilitating conditions most of the time can result into blindness making these patients a burden on their families , society and ultimately the economy and not the mention the psychological state they suffer from. Hence it is our responsibility and opportunity as doctors to help them see a brighter day and give them a chance for a better future. Our unity and team work will not only help us flourish but also we will be able to contribute to the economy.
